FAQs

faqWhat is a charter school?
A charter school is a public school of choice. Charter schools are granted greater flexibility in their operations. In return for this flexibility charter schools are expected to perform at a higher level of standard on both test scores and graduation rates.

What grades are offered at the TSMS?
TSMS serves grades Kindergarten through 8th.

Is there a cost to attend your school?
Charter schools are tuition-free, like all public schools. All students, regardless of background, are eligible to submit an application.

What is the student/teacher ratio at the TSMS?
The average is 18/1. Smaller class size enables more one-on-one time between the teacher and students. Our charter restricts our enrollment; once we reach our maximum enrollment capacity all applications will be placed on our waiting list.

How can I find out about school closings such as holidays and early dismissal days?
All school closings, holidays and early dismissal days are listed on the school calendar issued at the beginning of the school year. If you do not have one, please visit our website at www.schoolofmathandscience.org

When there is a school closing due to inclement weather, how can I find out if the TSMS is closed?
School closings will be announced on all local television stations. If the LCS are closed, the TSMS will also be closed. Please visit our website at www.schoolofmathandscience.org for any updates regarding school closings.

What should I do if my child is going to be tardy or absent from school?
If your child will be tardy or absent due to illness or injury, please call the main office as soon as possible, no later than the day of the absence and follow up with written notification of the absence (e.g. doctor, dentist, etc.). If your child has an appointment during school hours (e.g. doctor, dentist, etc.), please sign your child into or out of school in the main office. The main office will notify your child's teachers of the absence.

Do you provide Transportation?
Bus Transportation is limited to students living between two (2) and four (4) miles from the school on a first come first served basis. The 2 to 4 mile zone is determined by drawing a radius line from the entrance of the school to the student's home or to the entrance of their subdivision. The stops used will be primarily "Area Stops" where parents will need to drive their students and wait for the bus to arrive. Parents will be required to sign an agreement with the school in relation to bus transportation. Students residing within the 2 mile zone are not eligible for bus transportation. Route sheets will be available on our website before school starts. http://schoolofmathandscience.org/index.php/2014-12-10-17-07-05/bus-routes

Do you provide Breakfast and/or Lunch?

Children need healthy meals to learn! TSMS offers healthy meal choices to all students through the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and—starting in 2016-17--the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP). Our participation in CEP means that we will be able to provide breakfast and lunch at no charge to ALL students enrolled at TSMS for school year 2016-17. Applications for free and reduced-price meals will not be collected this year.

Students may purchase a second meal or—on occasion a la carte items—by having their parents open an account for them. Meal prices are: $1.50 for breakfast; $3.00 for lunch.Parents may fund their student's account online by credit card or ACH deposit or by sending cash or personal check to school. (Students will not be served a la carte items without funds in their account.)

Does the TSMS offer Tutoring?
Yes, we have a tutoring program at our school. Every student is eligible for extra help on an as needed basis. All of our teachers stay after school for extra help, or for students to make up missed work. A schedule of teachers staying after school will be made available at the beginning of each school year.

Does the TSMS have a "Gifted" Program?
TSMS has implemented an Advanced Program for 6th, 7th and 8th grade students. The Advance Program includes small group, advanced instruction in English Language Arts, Mathematics and Science. Students who are in Advanced Program also can earn high school credits in the middle school, such as Algebra I, Geometry, Biology, and Foreign Language. Criteria for entry are based on student benchmarks, classroom performance, teacher recommendation, and state test results.
