Local elementary school students will have an opportunity to put their math skills to the test on Saturday, Jan. 27, during the 11th Annual Math Stars Competition hosted by the Tallahassee School of Math and Science (TSMS). During the competition, TSMS will open its doors to third, fourth and fifth graders from schools across Leon County, offering a chance for students to win a variety of prizes.

“The Math Stars Competition gives us the opportunity to recognize outstanding young mathematicians and stimulate interest in mathematics among elementary school students throughout Leon County,” said Ahmet Temel, principal of TSMS. “We eagerly await incoming applications, and we are excited to crown a new Math Stars champion in just a few short weeks.”

The Math Stars Competition will commence at 8:30 a.m. with light refreshments and a tour of the school. Two rounds of competition will follow, concluding with the award ceremony at noon. Mini-events such as Hidato, speed math and the smallest integer game will be held before and during the lunch break.

The top three “Math Stars” will receive a $100, $75 and $50 gift card, respectively. Trophies will be awarded to the top five contestants, and medals will be prized to those in sixth-10th place.

Registration to participate in the Math Stars Competition is open until Wednesday, Jan. 24, and requires a fee of $10, which includes lunch. To register, please visit tsmas.org/index.php/registration.
